Most Aussies love their sport and our Bathurst Region is no different. Whichever sport you choose as your passion, you can rest assured someone will hit their head.
Then there are the questions, How bad is it? Can he play on? Can you get him off the field so we can play on?
How do you assess a head injury? How do you tell if he is good to go or needs an ambulance?
Any one head injury symptom needs a medical assessment.
And if they seem OK, they should be monitored for 8hours (The brain can take a while to swell and their condition to deteriorate, so the symptoms may be delayed).
It is OK for them to go to sleep and they will probably like to lie on their back with their head slightly elevated, but they can’t be unconscious lying on their back – so if you can’t tell if they are asleep or unconscious, or if you know they are unconscious, put them on their side in the recovery position and call an ambulance. (It keeps their tongue and vomit clear of their airway).
If there is any chance of neck and/or spine damage, keep them as still as possible and support their neck whilst you wait for the ambulance.
